Solid Wood Wine Boxes
Solid wood wine boxes are the category buyers contact us about when a paper box will not do. You want the weight, the grain, the sound the lid makes when it closes. We build them from pine or paulownia, usually with a lacquer or stain finish, and we cut the insert to hold the bottle at four points so it does not move in transit. If you have a bottle that retails above a certain price, this is the box that matches it.
Most of what we make in this category is single bottle or two bottle. Four bottle and six bottle crates come up less often, usually for collector sets or a vertical format. You will tell us the bottle dimensions, or send a sample, and we take it from there. The blank sample shows you the structure. The printed sample shows you the finish. After that, production runs the same eight steps as everything else we build.
How to choose
Start with the bottle. A Burgundy shape and a Bordeaux shape need different insert cavities, and a sparkling bottle is wider again. If you send the actual bottle, we measure it and cut the insert to that profile. If you send dimensions only, add a millimetre or two to the widest point so the bottle does not bind. The insert rule stays the same either way: four points of contact, no unsupported neck or shoulder.
Then pick the wood. Pine is the workhorse, cheap and stable, takes stain well. Paulownia is lighter, which matters if you are shipping air freight or handing the box to a customer who will carry it around a tasting room. Both are solid, not veneer over MDF. If you want a high gloss lacquer, tell us up front. That finish is the hardest to hold on wood, and we will need to agree on the colour before the first article.
The third decision is the insert. Velvet tray looks best for a gift box. EVA foam holds better in a courier van. Paper mould is the lightest and the cheapest, but it does not look premium. For a solid wood box, most buyers choose velvet or foam. If the box is going to be shipped as a set, not just handed over a counter, choose foam and let us run the vibration check on it.

Can I get a solid wood box for a single bottle?
Yes, that is most of what we build in this category. Send the bottle dimensions or a sample. We cut the insert to the bottle profile and build the box around it. Single bottle boxes are the lightest and cheapest solid wood option, and they are the ones most wineries use for gift sets and retail display.
What is the difference between pine and paulownia?
Pine is denser and heavier, and it takes a darker stain well. Paulownia is lighter, which saves on freight and makes the box easier to carry. Both are solid wood, not veneer. If you are shipping air freight or handing the box to customers in a tasting room, paulownia is usually the better choice.
Will the bottle stay put during shipping?
That is what the insert is for. We cut it to hold the bottle at four points, and we check every batch with a shake test, a tilt test, and an inversion test. Then we drop the loaded box from 1.2 metres onto all six faces and run it through a vibration simulation. If the bottle moves, the insert gets recut before the box ships.
What we control
We cut the insert to plus or minus one millimetre and the box body to plus or minus two. That is our control tolerance, not a target. If the insert is off by more than that, the bottle either rattles or will not seat. We check every batch with a ten second shake, a forty five degree tilt, and an inversion. If the bottle moves in any of those, the insert gets recut before the box goes anywhere. No exceptions.
Colour is the other thing we watch. Wood takes stain unevenly, and black, deep blue and burgundy are the hardest to hold. We match to Pantone, approve the first article, and sample through the run. Then we drop the loaded box from 1.2 metres onto all six faces, stack it under 40 kg for 24 hours, and run it through a vibration simulation that mimics truck and sea freight. If the bottle stays put and the wood does not crack, it ships.
