Leather Wine Boxes

Leather wine boxes sit between rigid board and solid wood. The outside reads as leather, the inside is greyboard, and the result costs less than a solid wood crate while still landing on a desk like a serious gift. Most buyers ask us for single or double bottle formats. Single bottle tends to be a collector gift or a thank-you. Double bottle usually means a set, a pairing, or a holiday release. What we actually make here is a rigid box with a leather-textured facing paper. That paper is the part you feel. It's not upholstery leather, and we tell buyers that upfront because it changes how you price the project and what you promise the end customer. If you need real leather, we can discuss, but for most wine packaging the textured paper gets the job done at a fraction of the cost.

How to Choose

Start with the bottle. Give us the diameter and height, or send a sample bottle. The insert has to hold the neck and shoulder at four points, no unsupported neck, no free play. If you're doing a double bottle box, the two bottles sit in separate cavities. That means the insert is milled for two shapes, and the box gets wider. Decide early whether the two bottles are identical or different, because that changes the insert drawing.

Then decide what the box has to survive. A box that gets handed over at a tasting counter doesn't need the same structure as one that gets shipped by a courier. For shipped boxes, we recommend the greyboard at 1400 g and a facing paper at 157 g minimum. We also run our in-house checks: a 1.2 m six-face drop test with the bottle loaded, and a stacking top load of 40 kg or more for 24 hours. If the box is for retail display, you can drop the drop test but keep the stack test, because shelves get loaded from above.

The last choice is closure. Magnetic closure is the default for leather wine boxes. It's quiet, it's clean, and it lets you open the box one-handed. A lid-and-base box without magnets is cheaper, but it feels cheaper too. If you're selling a premium bottle, don't save the money on the magnet. If you're selling an everyday bottle, the lid-and-base is fine. We'll tell you the same thing on a call.

Is the leather real?

Usually no. The default is a leather-textured paper on greyboard. It looks and feels like leather at a fraction of the cost. If you need real leather, we can source it, but the price goes up and the production time changes. Tell us upfront which one you want.

Can I get a sample before mass production?

Yes. We offer two sample types. A blank sample shows the structure and the insert fit. A printed sample shows the final colour and finish. We recommend the printed sample for leather wine boxes because the texture and colour are the whole point.

What if my bottle is an unusual shape?

Send us the bottle or the exact dimensions. The insert is custom milled to your bottle's profile. The four-point hold rule still applies: neck and shoulder supported, no unsupported sections. We'll adjust the insert drawing until the bottle passes our shake, tilt, and invert checks.

What We Control

The board is greyboard, 1200 g minimum. For double bottle boxes or anything that ships, we go to 1400 g. We don't use recycled greyboard, and we don't use high-moisture paper, because both cause warping in humid storage. The facing paper is the leather texture. It's 157 g minimum, and we can match a Pantone colour on it. Black, deep blue, and burgundy are the hardest to hold. We do first-article approval and mid-run sampling, so you see the colour before we run the full order.

The insert is the part we measure twice. Our control tolerance is plus or minus 1 mm on the insert and plus or minus 2 mm on the box body. The bottle has to sit still: shake it for 10 seconds, no movement; tilt it 45 degrees, no slide; invert it, no release. We check that on every sample. For leather wine boxes with a PVC window, the window is die-cut into the lid, and the insert has to align with the window so the bottle shows straight. That alignment is part of the insert tolerance, not an afterthought.
